Once a traditional fishing village, Agia Pelagia is now known as a seaside resort. Its narrow beach, set in a protected bay, is filled with lounge chairs and is popular for jet skiing and scuba diving. Souvenir handicraft shops, beach bars, and seafood restaurants are scattered around the waterfront. Inland, whitewashed Greek Orthodox Church of Agia Pelagia is a former monastery that dates back to the Venetian period.
Very near to Agia Pelagia, the guest can visit the village of Fodele. Fodele is a rural village known for its El Greco Museum, which displays prints of works by the Renaissance artist Doménikos Theotokópoulos (known as “El Greco”) in the small house where he was allegedly born. The Byzantine-era Panagia Church has a fresco-covered interior, while the monastery of Agios Panteleimonas contains several 17th-century icons. Orange and lemon groves dot the village and surrounding areas.
The Archeological site of Knosos is somewhat half an hour drive from your Retreat as well. Knossos is the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete and has been called Europe’s oldest city. Settled as early as the Neolithic period, the name Knossos survives from ancient Greek references to the major city of Crete.
Last but not least, very next to your Retreat, you can get access to fresh dairy products and veggies from local producers as well as do your shopping in a regular grocery store.
